"How much milk does a desi cow give per day?" There's no single answer, because India has more than 50 registered indigenous cattle breeds, and ICAR-NBAGR adds new ones every year. A well-fed Sahiwal can give 15 litres a day, while a Vechur from Kerala gives 2–3 litres of very rich milk.

This guide puts the main desi breeds side by side: daily milk, lactation yield, fat %, purpose and price. You can see which breed fits your farm, your gaushala or simply your curiosity.

Quick answer

  • An average non-descript desi cow in India gives only about 3–4 litres a day.
  • Pure dairy (milch) breeds like Sahiwal, Gir and Red Sindhi give 6–12 litres a day on typical farms, and 15+ litres when well managed.
  • Dwarf breeds like Punganur and Vechur give 2–5 litres a day, but with higher fat.
  • Desi milk usually has 4–5% fat, compared with about 3.5–4% for Holstein and Jersey crossbreds, and pure-bred desi cows give A2 milk.

Which desi cow gives the most milk?

Daily milk ranges from 2–3 litres (dwarf breeds) to 12+ litres (Sahiwal and Gir).
  1. Sahiwal is India's highest-yielding desi dairy breed, with the most consistent milk.
  2. Gir comes close behind, with higher fat and outstanding heat and disease tolerance. In Brazil, selected "Gir Leiteiro" herds average more than 17 kg a day.
  3. Red Sindhi is hardy, compact and reliable in hot, humid areas.
  4. Tharparkar is the desert specialist. It keeps milking on dry fodder in Rajasthan heat.
  5. Rathi is the "Kamdhenu of the desert" for small Rajasthan dairies.

For milk volume, choose Sahiwal or Gir. For heat and drought, choose Tharparkar or Rathi. For a small backyard with a little rich milk, choose Punganur, Vechur or Malnad Gidda.

Why desi cows give less milk than Jersey or HF, and why that's okay

A Holstein-Friesian (HF) crossbred can give 15–25 litres a day. So why keep desi cows?

Desi cowHF / Jersey crossbred
Milk per day3–12 L (breed-dependent)10–25 L
Fat %4–5% (Vechur and Punganur higher)3.5–4%
Milk proteinA2 (pure-bred)Mostly A1/A2 mix
Heat toleranceExcellentPoor without cooling
Disease and tick resistanceHighLow to moderate
Feed and vet costLowHigh
Milk price₹70–₹120/L (A2 premium)₹40–₹60/L
Productive lifeLong (8–10 lactations possible)Shorter

Desi cows produce less milk, but more value per litre. The higher fat, A2 protein and premium price mean a desi dairy can be as profitable as a crossbred one with much lower risk, especially in hot regions.

Desi cow fat percentage, and why it matters for ghee

Fat decides how much butter and ghee you get:

Milk fat %Milk needed for 1 kg bilona ghee (approx.)
3.5% (crossbred)32–35 L
4.5% (Sahiwal, Gir, Red Sindhi)25–30 L
5.5%+ (Vechur, Punganur)20–24 L

That's why A2 desi cow bilona ghee costs more, and why it tastes richer and grainier (danedaar). Read how bilona ghee is made and A1 vs A2 ghee.

Desi cow price in India (2026)

BreedTypical cow price
Sahiwal₹50,000 – ₹1.5 lakh
Gir₹50,000 – ₹1.5 lakh (pedigree ₹2 lakh+)
Red Sindhi₹40,000 – ₹1 lakh
Tharparkar / Rathi₹40,000 – ₹90,000
Kankrej / Hariana / Ongole₹35,000 – ₹80,000
Punganur₹50,000 – ₹1.5 lakh (show animals far higher)
Vechur₹65,000 – ₹1.1 lakh
Non-descript local desi cow₹20,000 – ₹40,000

Prices vary with milk record, lactation number, pedigree and region. Always watch the cow being milked before buying.

How to get more milk from a desi cow

  1. Green fodder daily (25–30 kg) plus dry fodder (5–6 kg).
  2. Concentrate by yield: about 1 kg for every 2–2.5 L of milk, plus a maintenance ration.
  3. Mineral mixture every day, which is often the missing piece. Try CattleCare Plus.
  4. 60–80 L of clean water for a milking cow.
  5. Timely breeding: one calf every 13–15 months.
  6. Deworm and vaccinate (FMD, HS, BQ, LSD) on schedule.
  7. Use breed-registered bulls or semen under the Rashtriya Gokul Mission to improve the next generation.
