Gir cow with domed forehead and long folded ears beside her calf, being milked into a brass pot in a gaushala

The Gir cow is the most famous desi breed in India. You can spot it by its domed forehead, its long ears folded like a leaf, and its half-moon horns. It comes from the Gir forests of Saurashtra in Gujarat and has been bred for centuries by Maldhari, Rabari, Bharwad and Charan herders. Today it is prized across India, and as far away as Brazil, for A2 milk that is rich in fat.

So how much milk does a Gir cow give per day? Here are realistic numbers: daily and lactation yield, fat %, prices, and what actually raises a Gir cow's milk.

Quick answer

Lactation and fat figures are from NDDB's breed profile. Daily figures are the range most Indian farms report.

Gir cow milk per day: what to really expect

A Gir cow's daily milk changes a lot across the lactation:

Stage of lactationTypical daily milk
First 2 weeks after calving5–8 L (rising)
Peak (6–10 weeks after calving)10–15 L on good farms
Mid-lactation (3–6 months)7–10 L
Late lactation (7–10 months)3–6 L
Dry period (about 2 months before next calving)0 L

Averaged over a full lactation of about 326 days, NDDB's 2,110 kg works out to roughly 6.5 litres a day. That's why buyers hear "15 litres" from sellers but measure 7–8 litres at home. Both can be true; one is the peak and the other is the average.

Gir cow milk per day in a year

  • Typical farm: 1,800–2,400 litres per lactation
  • Well-managed herd: 2,500–3,300 litres
  • Brazil's Gir Leiteiro (dairy Gir): after decades of selection, the breed averages more than 17 kg a day, and top cows reach 70 kg. This shows what the Gir's genetics can do with selection and feeding.

Gir cow fat % and milk quality

Fresh Gir cow milk poured from a brass pot into a clay pot, with golden ghee and a wooden bilona churner
Gir milk averages about 4.6% fat, which is why it makes rich, grainy bilona ghee.
  • Fat: about 4.6% on average, higher than most crossbred cows (about 3.5–4%). That means more butter and ghee per litre.
  • SNF (solids-not-fat): usually around 8.5–9%.
  • A2 protein: pure-bred Gir cows carry the A2 beta-casein variant. Many people find A2 milk easier to digest than A1 milk from Holstein and Jersey crossbreds. (Read: A1 vs A2 ghee.)
  • Colour and taste: slightly golden from the beta-carotene in green fodder, with a naturally sweet, creamy taste.

Ghee yield: with 4.6% fat, the traditional bilona method needs roughly 25–30 litres of Gir milk for 1 kg of ghee. That is why real A2 Gir bilona ghee costs more than ordinary ghee. (See: How bilona ghee is made.)

Gir cow vs other desi breeds

BreedTypical milk per dayAvg lactation yieldFat %
Gir6–10 L (12–15 L well-managed)2,110 kg~4.6%
Sahiwal8–12 L~2,300 kg~4.5–5%
Red Sindhi6–10 L~1,840 kg~4.5–5%
Tharparkar6–10 L1,600–2,500 kg~4.5–5%
Punganur2–5 L—high (up to ~8% reported)
Vechur2–3 L~560 kg4.7–5.8%

Sahiwal usually gives a little more milk. Gir wins on heat tolerance, disease resistance and recognition, which is why it fetches some of the highest prices among desi breeds. See every breed side by side in our desi cow milk per day comparison.

Gir cow price in India (2026)

TypeTypical price
Gir heifer (not yet calved)₹35,000 – ₹70,000
Gir cow, average yield₹50,000 – ₹1,00,000
High-yielding Gir cow (12 L+)₹1,00,000 – ₹2,00,000
Pedigree / show animals₹2,00,000+ (record sales have crossed ₹10 lakh)

Prices depend on milk record, age, lactation number, pedigree papers and region. Gujarat and Rajasthan breeders are usually cheaper than buying in South India.

Buying tips:

  1. See the cow milked twice (morning and evening) before paying, and measure it yourself.
  2. Ask for vaccination and deworming records, plus pedigree or breed-registration papers if available.
  3. Check the breed traits: domed forehead, leaf-shaped folded ears, horns curving back then up, and a red or speckled red-white coat.
  4. Prefer a cow in her 2nd or 3rd lactation. That's when yield is near its best.

Gir cow milk price per litre

Pure A2 Gir milk sells at a premium:

  • Cities (home delivery, glass bottles): ₹80 – ₹120 per litre
  • Villages / direct from gaushala: ₹50 – ₹70 per litre

The premium reflects lower yield than crossbreds, higher feed cost per litre, and growing demand for A2 milk.

How to increase a Gir cow's milk per day

  1. Green fodder every day: 25–30 kg of hybrid Napier, maize or jowar, plus 5–6 kg of dry fodder.
  2. Concentrate by yield: roughly 1 kg of balanced concentrate for every 2–2.5 litres of milk, on top of a 1.5–2 kg maintenance ration.
  3. Mineral mixture: 50–60 g a day. Mineral deficiency is the most common hidden cause of low yield and poor conception. A supplement like CattleCare Plus covers minerals and vitamins in one scoop.
  4. Clean water: a milking Gir can drink 60–80 litres a day, more in summer.
  5. Heat and shade: Gir handles heat better than crossbreds, but shade, fans or sprinklers in May–June still protect yield.
  6. Calving interval: aim for one calf every 13–15 months. A long dry period is lost milk.
  7. Gentle, regular milking at fixed times. Gir cows are known to hold back milk when stressed, so many farmers milk with the calf beside the cow.

Why Gir milk makes the best ghee

Gir milk's high fat and A2 protein make it the traditional choice for bilona ghee: curd set from whole milk, hand-churned into makkhan, then slow-heated. Our A2 Gir Cow Ghee and A2 Gaushala Gir Cow Ghee are made this way from Gir cows' milk.
